As president of United Way of the Big Bend, Dr. Armstrong is helping that organization become a catalyst for a stronger, healthier community. Ken came to Tallahassee in 1996 from Texas where he led the major gift development program of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. In this position he worked with such national figures as Bill Gates, Carol Burnett, Caroline Hunt, and Roger Staubach. His appointment to our United Way culminated a 25-year career in nonprofit management, much of it in college and university administration. While he has worked with United Way of the Big Bend, the organization has seen its fundraising over 13 years increase by 118% and is the fourth-fastest-growing campaign of all large and mid-size cities in America during that time. United Way was the recipient of the 1999 Small Business Excellence Award under his leadership. During the same year, Ken himself won the Distinguished Leader Award presented by Leadership Tallahassee. He also received the Budd Bell Champion for Children Award in 2005. Ken serves on almost 10 community boards and coalitions. |

Dr. Armstrong is the author of the paperback novel Saving the President and a frequent speaker at regional and national conferences, drawing on both his experience and academic background which includes a Ph.D. from University of Virginia and two masters degrees. He is a newly-published author with his paperback novel Saving the President hitting the shelves in 2008.
Ken is a catalyst for such key initiatives as Whole Child Leon and the B.E.S.T. Project. He is proof that a motivated and committed person can help change a community for the better. |
